Ostend Walk (Self Guided), Frankfurt
Today Ostend is a vibrant creative hub with young companies, entertainment centers, clubs, new restaurants and delightful houses. This former industrial heartland was also once home to a vibrant Jewish community. As you stroll through the neighborhood, you will see little metal plates on the pavement. They are memorials to the Jewish victims of the atrocities of World War II. As you tour round the semi-industrial neighborhood you may be able to sense how it is transforming itself as new venues and homes spring up from time to time. One of the area's principal attractions is the Frankfurt Zoological Garden. It is home to more than 4,500 animals representing no fewer than 450 species. Here you will see lions, rhinos, gorillas and crocodiles. The wildlife live in surroundings that approximate as close as possible their natural habitats. With or without children accompanying you, this is a wonderful place to visit to see exotic animals from all over the world. Another notable place in Ostend is the Hoch Conservatory, a school for music and the arts which was established in 1878. Enjoy your time in an evolving and forward looking part of the city that hasn’t forgotten its past, and which features some fascinating attractions.
