Maria Luisa Park Walk (Self Guided), Seville

Maria Luisa Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Spain and most likely the rest of Europe as well. This 85-acre (34-hectare) site was formerly the gardens of a royal palace and is filled with gardens, pools, monuments, historic buildings, fountains and museums. Walk or jog along tree-lined avenues, enjoy a horse and carriage ride and let the children run about the open spaces.

The highlight of the park is the Plaza de España, a large semicircular building that was commissioned for the Spanish American Exhibition of 1929. The stunning façade has been seen in several movies, including Lawrence of Arabia. Stroll along the colonnade and see the tiled alcoves with their ceramic benches. Each one of these spaces represents a different province of Spain. In front of the building is a small canal. Rent a boat and glide across the water.

Other highlights of Maria Luisa Park are plazas and monuments dedicated to writers and a round Moorish-style pavilion on the edge of a lake, dedicated to King Alfonso XIII. Visit the southern end of the park for its two museums, housed inside magnificent pavilions. The Bellas Artes contains the Archeology Museum while the Mudejar hosts the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs.

Seville's varied history has left behind a great deal of heritage, much of which is seen in the Old Town, the largest in Europe.
