Leopold Town Walking Tour (Self Guided), Budapest

Leopold Town is a fascinating neighborhood in central Budapest that offers a heady mix of history and modernism. Among the many old buildings, some of which were constructed in the 18th century is a collection of fashionable nightspots and restaurants.

The area is small enough to be easily navigated on foot and one of the standout features you will come across is the Hungarian Parliament Building. This magnificent structure is the second largest Parliament in Europe after the Palace of Westminster in London, which inspired part of the Hungarian design. The building features Neo-Gothic turrets and arches, sits on the banks of the Danube River and is more than 100 years old.

Another stunning building is St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in the city. Inside this vast twin-towered place of worship is a sacred relic, the mummified hand of St. Stephen. He was the first King of Hungary. There are lots of other fascinating old buildings to see during your meanderings. Some of them even house fast-food restaurants.

Continue your tour of Leopold Town with a visit to Liberty Square. In the middle of the plaza is the last remaining Soviet star in the city. This monument honors the Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation of Budapest from Nazi occupation in World War II. There may well be a strong sense of history in Leopold Town, but it is not stuck in the past. The party loving crowd makes its way here at night for the exhilarating clubs.
