Clifton Village Shopping (Self Guided), Bristol

Experience the elegant charms and genteel upmarket delights of Clifton Village, a quiet, beautiful and expensive Bristol suburb. Browse a stunning array of independent boutiques selling antiques, furniture, jewelry, clothing, gourmet foods and a lot more. Appreciate the area's fine Georgian and Victorian architecture and enjoy its cozy cafés, restaurants and traditional pubs. Be sure to visit the Clifton Arcade, a lovely Victorian shopping arcade in the heart of the village. It first opened its elegant doors in 1878 and today there are 17 unique shops and the Primrose Café, all under one roof.

One of the principle highlights of a visit to Clifton Village is the nearby Clifton Suspension Bridge. Since 1864 this long suspension bridge with its wrought iron chains has spanned the River Avon and Avon Gorge. It was designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, although he died before it was completed. Stop by the visitor center to learn about the bridge's history and then go on a guided-tour of the engineering marvel and take in glorious views from its walkway. At night, this icon of the city is an even more spectacular sight when it illuminated, from half an hour before sunset up until midnight.
