Byres Road Area Walk (Self Guided), Glasgow

Give your taste buds a welcome treat with a visit to Byres Road and some of the surrounding streets. You will come across a large and tempting array of bars and restaurants, offering everything from casual to fine dining. Sample some of the many cuisines on offer, including traditional Scottish fare, Mediterranean dishes and specialties from the Far East.

Stroll down Byres Road and after the numerous banks and building societies, you’ll come across a clutch of welcoming bars serving good food as well as fine ales, wines and spirits. Among the popular spots in this part of the city is Ashton Lane, a cobbled backstreet with bars, restaurants and a cinema. This was once a rundown part of the city, but today is the focus of Glasgow West End café society. Drop by any time, for lunch an evening meal or for a morning coffee and a pastry.

Another must-see is Cresswell Lane, which features a number of independent stores, some selling unique pieces of handcrafted jewelry that you won’t see anywhere else. Your walk through the area will also take you to the Great Western Road, Glasgow's longest and straightest road. Along its length are many terraced houses and villas. To the north is the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. This extensive site features parkland, greenhouses, a heritage trail and a tearoom.
