If you have more than a few days to spend in Rome, it is definitely worth it to venture beyond the main sights and try off-the-beaten track itineraries. This is often a good idea, when travelling, but in Rome I think unusual itineraries can be particularly pleasant: not only will they give you a more authentic idea of the city, but they will most likely let you discover beautiful unknown corners and details that you might otherwise miss.

Rome, like many cities in Italy but possibly more than any other, is very generous with its sights and you will be surprised by how beautiful and historically meaningful some lesser known area are.

One itinerary that I particularly like is around the areas called quartiere Coppede’ and quartiere Trieste (‘quartiere means ‘area’), reasonably well known by the locals but not by mass tourism. These two adjacent residential areas are just outside the historic centre of Rome and can be easily reached from there by bus or tram. They are tranquil, leafy areas, very safe and they host some lovely parks and some impressive buildings representative of a special interpretation of the rococo style otherwise unknown in Rome. ......
