A Local’s Guide to “Beaches” in Vienna, Vienna, Austria
Vienna has a lot to offer but it has no access to the sea. Yet – and that might be surprising for many people – it’s a paradise for water sports! One of the best ways to enjoy Vienna’s (sometimes very hot) summers are cooling off at one of their amazing waters that easily substitute any ocean beach, and while I have good access to some really nice beaches in NYC (see my previous post), the waters in Vienna certainly is something I miss badly. The fourth heatwave of this summer got me dreaming about my favourite swimming spots in my beloved home city, so here I’m sharing my top list:
Please note: Most of the described locations are “wild” which means swimming at these places is allowed but there’s no changing rooms, lockers or lifeguards on duty. Also never leave any valuables unattended as stealing (unfortunately) can be an issue!
The Alte Donau (“Old Danube”) is a natural remnant of what the Danube used to be before humans have rectified the river into it’s current shape. Today it’s Vienna’s first address for water sports of all kinds: You can surf, sail, row a boat, swim and at some winters – when it gets cold enough – even go ice skating. Surrounded by lawns and trees, this is a giant natural playground and probably the city’s most popular spot on a hot summer day. Despite the dark green-ish colour and abundance of water plants, the water quality is flawless. One of my favourite locations for a swim are the freely accessible wooden platforms along the Southeastern shore. If you prefer a more monitored and family-friendly environment with lockers, playgrounds and cafeterias – the public “beaches” Angelibad and Gansehaufel (day-ticket for about 6 EUR) are great choices. ......
