While the Bunaken National Marine Park is deservingly the star attraction, Manado surprisingly harbours a lot of intriguing sights worth its own time of exploration.

I allocated only a day to explore Manado and learned the hard way that there is so much to discover in the city that it is worth multiple day of exploration.

This guide will focus on the Chinatown part of Manado, which is located at the Manado’s old core and is among its most beautiful section.

Start your morning at the traditional market of Pasar Bersehati. There are several sections to Pasar Bersehati.

The main building is where the local Manado residents go to buy fruits, vegetables and groceries. There is also a wet market where you can watch fish catches of the day on display.

Finally, there is also a food court area where you can have a taste of a local breakfast before you embark on your exploration of the Chinatown.

Built by Liem Kim An in the year of 1965, this is the third oldest temple in Manado. Flanked by two lions at the gate, this temple is dedicated to the beloved Bodhisattva deity Kuan Yin (or Guanyin or Avalokitesvara), which is often associated with the virtue of compassion. ......
