Turnul Zincarilor (The Tinsmiths' Tower), Sibiu

The Tinsmiths鈥� Tower is a striking historical structure in the heart of Sibiu, located along the picturesque Citadel Street. As one of the four citadel towers that remain, the tower has been carefully restored, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience a piece of Sibiu鈥檚 fortified past. A nominal fee grants access to explore the tower and the adjoining walls, offering great photo opportunities and panoramic views that capture the old-world charm of the surrounding area.

Standing at 25 meters high, the tower鈥檚 architecture is among the most expressive in the region. It begins with a sturdy square base鈥攔emnants of an older structure鈥攖hen transitions into a pentagonal shape before suddenly expanding into an octagonal upper level. The slightly off-balance, hexagonally-planned roof gives the tower a unique silhouette, while the interior woodwork is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship of Sighi葯oara鈥檚 master carpenters. The tower, along with the nearby Clock Tower, held an exceptional defensive position during times of siege.

The Tinsmiths鈥� Tower also holds historic scars鈥攊ts facades still bear bullet marks from the Hungarian siege between 1704 and 1706. A small pentagonal bastion facing the Lower Town is believed to have been added during repair works in 1583. Today, nestled among narrow cobbled streets and flanked by historic houses, the Tinsmiths鈥� Tower offers a captivating blend of architecture, history, and atmosphere.
