Peralta Adobe, San Jose
The Peralta Adobe is the oldest surviving building in San Jose, a humble yet historically rich structure that dates back to 1797. Originally built—most likely—by Manuel González, an Apache Indian and one of the first settlers to arrive in California with the Spanish Anza Expedition in 1776, the adobe stands as a testament to the early days of the Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, California’s first municipal government established in 1777.
This adobe was González’s second home after his first site proved unsuitable due to winter flooding. After he died in 1804, the adobe was transferred to Luís María Peralta in 1808. A respected sergeant in the Spanish Army and commissioner of the Pueblo, Peralta made notable additions to the building, dividing it into two rooms and adding a porch, kitchen, and chimney. Peralta would later become the owner of Rancho San Antonio, one of Alta California’s largest ranchos. He passed away in 1851, leaving the adobe to his two daughters.
Saved from demolition, the adobe was purchased and restored by the City of San Jose in 1966, with a surrounding park completed in time for the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. Today, the Peralta Adobe is more than just a relic—it is San Jose’s Historic Landmark #1, a California Historical Landmark, and proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also holds the distinction of being the first certified site on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
