Established in 1979 within the historic heart of old Bordeaux on Devise Street, La Machine à Lire was founded by Henri Martin and Danielle Depierre. Since 1996, the bookstore has found its abode on Parliament Square (Place du Parlement), occupying a ground floor space of over 300 square meters within a 17th-century building. Ownership of La Machine à Lire transitioned to Hélène des Ligneris in 2008.
